Here is a photo of me, racing my surfski off the coast of Dana Point, CA, last March, surrounded by the local fauna. I've been paddling off and on for 10 years. I started with outrigger canoes (6 man) then went to 1 man due to a shoulder dislocation, then I had a hiatus of a number of years, due to breast cancer treatment, then onto sea kayaking for 4 years and started surfski paddling and racing this past year. The sea kayak got too heavy and was a real problem for my back, even though the adventures were fun. (Paddling and camping in Maine, Alaska, San Juan Islands, Wales, UK, paddling across the channel to Catalina Island). The surfski only weighs 24 lbs, compared to over 50 lbs for the kayak and there is much less gear to worry about.
